Background
Jon is a senior lecturer and the microscopy manager for Cranfield Defence and Security, supporting internal and external users as well as undertaking research and consultancy.
Jon lectures on various M-level and short courses largely in relation to the properties and processing of metallic materials for both civilian and defence applications. He was the Course Director for the Forensic Engineering and Science MSc between 2015-2020, and developed modules teaching various aspects of failure identification and analysis based on his practical experience of undertaking failure investigations.
Current activities
Jon's main research interests relate to the performance and analysis of materials in extreme environments. In addition he has a growing interest in the use of additively manufactured materials for defence applications. In total he currently is the primary supervisor for 3 and co-supervisor for 3 PhD students, as well as being on the review panel for several more.
In addition he regularly supervises MSc projects each year on areas such as gun shot residue analysis, explosive effects on materials and the quantification of the disruption of IEDs.
